Automatic Update of IE fails and corrupts current IE

Automatic updates downloaded the latest version of Internet Explorer
Thursday (October 19). I have no idea why Automatic Updates tried to install
IE October 19. I was expecting AU to do that November 1. Anyway, when I
clicked install the IE installation went through the Automatic Updates
Delivery
Experience Screenshots sequence that's displayed on
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/updatemanagement/windowsupdate/ie7announcement.mspx.
The update seemed to be working, until AU began uninstalling the current
version of IE. That's when it hung up the entire system - the moving cursor
just kept moving from left to right, again and again. I could move the window
around the desktop, but couldn't click on anything else. Even
control/alt/delete didn't work. So, I restarted the system and tried the
update once again, with the
same results.

The Release Notes for Internet Explorer 7 suggest using
(%windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe) to completely delete IE before trying to
install a newer version. However, that also hangs up the system. I wasn't
getting anywhere so I did a system restore to a few days ago.

Everything is back to normal, however, IE is missing most of its clickable
functions, including the tools menu. Only Links and convert to a PDF file are
left. In fact, I'm not even sure which version of IE is running now. And
Internet Options in Control Panel will not run.

Any thoughts on rebuilding IE?

Today Automatic Updates downloaded and installed a security update for Media
Player, without causing any problems.

Right now, IE7 should only be installing through Automatic Updates if you
had a previous pre-release version of IE7. Is it possible that you removed
the uninstall info from the beta or RC version using CCCleaner or something
similar? Have you tried manually downloading & running the full
installation?

You're right. I recently installed CCleaner and I had previous pre-releases
of the beta and RC versions. I will try downloading the full installation and
see what happens.

Thanks, Steve.

Steve,

Thanks for your help.

I tried downloading and installing the full installation. The result: a
broken version of IE 6 and a broken Internet Options (in Control Panel).
Whenever I run IE it loads, freezes, then loads another instance of itself,
which again freezes and loads another instance... etc. I'm currently using
Firefox, which seems to be working fine. However, I'd prefer to get IE
working again. I am beginning to feel that CCleaner's removal of the
uninstall information for IE 7 and the unexpected update may have done in IE
and Internet Options on this computer. I don't want to reformat and
re-install XP on this system because I have way too many applications and
plug-ins installed, which would take forever to find and then re-install.

Any thoughts about getting IE and Internet Options working again, without
doing major surgery on XP? I suppose I can run the system as is, but not
being able to access Internet Options could lead to real problems at some
time in the future.
