Automatic Update is controlled by network administrator

I have been trying to turn on Automatic Update (pre SP2) but the options are
grayed out on the config screen. I ran a security check from the Microsoft
site and it said that my Automatic Update is being controlled by the network
adfministrator. That's interesting seeing as how I'm on a standalone machine
at home.

I had a nasty virus a while back and I had to remove it manually with some
registry edits. I may have screwed AU up at that time.

Now I need to know how to change Auto Upd back to local machine control.

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi,

Suggestions:

Windows Update Greyed Out - Restore (Line 179)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If the above doesn't help: Go to Start/Run and type in: services.msc
Scroll down to Cryptographic Services and set it to Auto.

More info, if needed:

Go to Start/Run and type in CMD. At the command prompt, type the following
commands, pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Good luck and keep us posted. :o)
