Auto update tells me it has updates to install on XP pro SP2 and when I tell
it to install them it hangs on intialising update. Eventually several hours
later it will tell me the update failed. This has only happened since
installing SP2. Is there somewhere I can manually download updates and
apply them myself. Or is there a way of fixing autoupdate.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the posting.

Before we go any further, please let me know how you updated Windows. Did
you
install critical updates by automatic updates or from
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us?

Also, please let me know the detailed symptoms you experience when you
perform the
following steps:

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Click Tools to choose Windows Update.

3. Install updates.

Please let me know the complete error message if you receive any.

In the meantime, let's perform the following steps to troubleshoot this
issue:

Step 1: Register DLL and restart Cryptographic Services
============================================
1. Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.

2. In the small box that Open, type the three letters: cmd then click the
OK
button.

3. In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and
white
text), type the following commands, pressing the Enter key on your keyboard
after
each line. When you receive the message, click OK.

REGSVR32.EXE SOFTPUB.DLL

REGSVR32.EXE WINTRUST.DLL

REGSVR32.EXE INITPKI.DLL

REGSVR32.EXE DSSENH.DLL

REGSVR32.EXE RSAENH.DLL

REGSVR32.EXE GPKCSP.DLL

REGSVR32.EXE SCCBASE.DLL

REGSVR32.EXE SLBCSP.DLL

REGSVR32.EXE CRYPTDLG.DLL

net stop cryptsvc

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot catold

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 cat2old

net start cryptsvc

Step 2: Delete WUTemp
====================
We need to check the WUTemp folder as this could also occur if the content
of the
WUTemp folder is corrupted.

1. Click on Start/Search and then select All Files and Folders.

2. Type "wutemp" without the quotation marks.

3. Make sure that the Look In option indicates "Local Hard Drives".

4. Click the Search button.

5. When the search is complete, delete all copies of the WUTemp folder.

6. Try accessing the Windows Update site.

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
Carsyn Gu

You can turn off auto update and run windows update manually.
Click START then RUN and type in wupdmgr.exe. This will run windows update.
Also you can run it from the START MENU itself.
To troubleshoot as to why auto update doesn't work go to START/ RUN and
type/cut and paste C:\Windows\Windows Update.log EXACTLY as it is here.
Look through the log then use the link below to see if you can find a
solution.
