automatic start ups win xp

when I start up my computer there is always various
programs that start up automatically. The are shown on
the lower right hand side of the screen on the toolbar.
I've tried everything to eliminate most of the programs
from automatic starting up, but it doesn't work. I now
have my documents file opening up twice every time I
start up the computer. I need help! Does anyone know
how to fix or turn off the automatic start-ups?

What _precisely_ have you been trying?

Go>start\run and type in msconfig and hit ok. Now click the startup tab and uncheck all the applications you don't want starting. Then be sure the option to start the program when windows starts is not set in the programs configuration settings. The area you refer to is known as the "system tray". {:~)

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start. Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG
from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the
programs you don't want to start automatically.
