Automatic shutdown

In the middle of using various programs a box appears and
says the an RPC error has occurred and and automatic
shutdown will occur. It then counts down from 1 minute
(I think it is that long) and then reboots.

Any ideas how to fix this?

DISCONNECT the subject computer from any network.

Install or enable a firewall:

VERY IMPORTANT to repair, closing ports is NOT enough.
Download the patch from the Windows Catalog.

(You may need to do this at an uninfected computer and burn to CD or
save on floppy.)

To avoid this type of problem use a good AV program and keep antivirus
definitions up to date.
