Automatic Restarts

whenever i try to install new software, or it seems like
whenever i do anything that writes to the hard drive i
have serious problems with my computer restarting in the
middle of installation. even had problems trying to do a
clean install of xp.

You can have memory chip destroyed or... malfunctioning power supplier. With
no proper voltage system - especially when system is used harder, it likes
to hang. Check voltage in BIOS, then perform all hardware test you can to
find out if you have destroyed memory chip, or mainboard.
