Previous History.

i have a sony laptop and it recently had a motherboard failure.

i sent the laptop to sony so they can repair the motherboard. the whole
motherboard has been replaced.

now the laptop is booting up fine, however the NIC card is not able to
talk to the DHCp server.

i have tried renewing the IP address, through the GUI and command line
but nothing works.

i have change the ethernet cable but it stills gets a 169. number.

so i tried plugging directly into the hub and bingo, it managed to get
a proper IP address but when i plug the ethernet cable through any
floor box it will still give me a automatic provate address. yet i know
the floor box is working and ethernet cable is working.

does anyone have any ideas.

What is the hub connected to? What is your DHCP server? What do you mean
by your "floor box." What kind of NIC card? or Do you mean a built in
Ethernet port? With this kind of information how can you expect anyone to
advise you?

The DHCP server is windows 2000 advanced server.

the hub is cisco 2970.

we have floor boxs in the office which connect to the server room, they
provide power and ethernet points, they all channel back to the server
room.

it is just a built in network card. intel pro/100ve network
connections.

thanks

I would talk with the network administrator to determine if the "floor box"
connects to a dhcp server, if the "floor box" is alive, and what settings
are required to connect to the network. I would also ask the admin what
dhcp server the cisco 2970 is connected to.
