Seems many people have had this problem. I've read a lot of posts, and tried
the things that I could easily understand.
The problem: Toshiba laptop with Windows XP Home SP2. Has been working
great for 5 months with wireless connection in home network. Suddenly
decided to stop connecting to the internet & simply tries to renew the IP
address incessantly.
Things I've tried/noticed:
1. The host computer is the desktop I'm currently on. Cable modem
connection is working like a champ.
2. I unplugged the router (Belkin) for a minute & plugged it back in. No
help.
3. I disabled the windows firewall on the laptop & norton internet security
on the desktop, even though neither have been altered in months. No help.
4. No recent spyware/viruses, and I keep up with checking for them.
5. I tried the ipconfig /release & /renew on the laptop, as well as the
obvious "Repair" connection features. Just gets hung up & can't get the IP
address. The current IP address & subnet masks are 0.0.0.0 for the laptop.
Default gateway is blank, DHCP server is 255.255.255.255. Weireless card is
a Intel 2200BG. Node type, Hybrid. "IP Routing enabled: No" "WINS Proxy
Enabled: No" "Dhcp Enabled: Yes" "Autoconfiguration Enabled: Yes" (info from
ipconfig /all)
6. Tried the WinSockFixXP....nope.
7. I plugged the cable modem directly into the laptop's ethernet port,
which works fine at work. It was unable to get an IP address through this
direct connection either.
8. The laptop is sitting right next to the desktop....not a distance issue.
Any help? I would've thought that this was a router problem, although the
same router's been working fine for months & the laptop was unable to get an
IP address through the ethernet card either.
New to networking here. Thanks for any help.
