Automatic Plug and Play detection

I just recently did a vanilla install of Windows XP Professional on an IBM
X40. I have noticed that no USB or PCMCIA devices are automatically
beginning assigned drivers. If I go into device manager and update the
driver on the device it installs fine but it is not doing this
automatically. I checked the plug and play service it is started. Does
anyone no if I am missing a particular patch????

Probably not. Head to the Windows Update site and download all the available
updates. I've had to manually install them in the past for USB for no known
reason either and yet, on other installs, it's installed the USB 1.1 and 2.0
ports just fine. One thing to check is if you know you have some 2.0 ports
then you should see "Enhanced" listed in there. Other than that so long as
they're listed now you should be all set as long as you do your updates (at
least the critical ones at any rate) though you might want to check for
additional hardware updates and the like both at Microsoft and your various
vendors.
