Automatic Index or TOC

A document in a standard font has titles in the same font but in bold/capital format on each page. Is it possible to prepare an index or TOC without manually selecting each item to be indexed or TOCed?

Hi Dan

There are two ways to create a Table of Contents. (1) apply appropriate
styles (generally, Word's built-in heading styles) to the text you want to
be in the TOC, and then tell the TOC to include all paragraphs in those
styles. (2) Select each individual paragraph and mark it for inclusion in
the TOC, and then tell the TOC to include all paragraphs you marked.
Generally, the first method is the easiest and most robust method to use.

If your document is formatted absolutely consistently, you could use Edit >
Replace to search for all text in bold and apply the Heading 1 style. To do
this, leave both the Find What and Replace With boxes empty, and click the
More button to access the formatting commands.

Hope this helps.

Dan,

Sorta, kindof.

You may be able to use Format>Autoformat to convert the
CAP/BOLD title text to Heading styles and then build the
TOC off the headings. If you want to preserve the
current look, then just define the heading sytle to
match. Before trying this, verify Tools>Autocorrect
Options>AutoFormat>Apply "Built in Heading Styles" is
checked.
