Is there anyway to create an index without having it reference the text in
the TOC? Example, in my TOC it references "Contacts" on page 3, when the
index is created it references it as Contacts, 2,3,2 and so on. How can I
omit the TOC from the index?

The only way an entry gets into an index is from an XE field. The symptom
indicates that there is an XE field inside the TOC. That might be because
you used the "Mark All" button in the Mark Entry dialog at some time after
you created the TOC. To check whether this is what's happening, click the ¶
button (because XE fields are marked as Hiddden) and look at the TOC.

If you put the cursor in the TOC and press F9, and in the popup tell it to
update the entire table, that should remove the XE fields from the TOC and
just leave the ones in the main text. Then update the index to get the
correct page numbers.
