I have just experienced the same problem with my home PC

Your suggestion might provide some additional information as to the problem except, as Weiss Konrad indicated, NO users can logon to the system - even in Safe Mode

Every possible solution I can think of requires a logon to the PC. I think that what is needed is a way to stop the auto-execution of code at logon (Holding the Shift key during logon works for disabling the execution of everything in the Startup folder, but not for things in the registry.

Any other ideas short of re-installing XP

Thank

this was no help to me. first u need to access a computer you can’t
login into to network to another machine and second the repair
function on an install disk does not fix passwords and loggins. this
is yet another virus related xp issue that needs to be dealt with by
the company that is supposed to support their product and I cannot
seem to find an answer to this growing problem.
I paid good money for a system that I cannot login to and at this
point my whole business is at a stand still since many of the file I
cannot access due to a simple login issue is costing far more money
now than it would be to switch operating systems.
some help would be greatly appreciated. This is a growing syndrom of
the fear of hackers has created a fear to repair

The only way I've been able to repair this so far is to do a repair install
from the CD and then reapply all updates.

my semi success came by removing the hd and using it a a secondary
then transfering as many files as I could without the risk of
transfering the same virus and thus losing all programs that were
installed and all info saved to destop files. I am still not sure why
there is no direct access via the registry with a boot of some sort.
I also noticed that all registry info was deleted upon viewing

Hey All,
I had the same problem. I got this solution courtesy of user "taurarian"

Quick Launch settings are not saved; Search Assistant Toolbar in Taskbar
Unable to logon to Windows after removing BlazeFind using a spyware removal
utility?
Logon - Logoff loop, also caused by BlazeFind

Give it a try.

I had a similar problem, but the reason was, that I have modified my partitions on the hard disk. Windows XP was installed on the second partition. Then I had to install DOS on the first partition. Unfortunately I make the DOS partition 8 GB large and first installed W98SE. But the original program needs DOS 6.2 and was not able to use FAT32. I changed the partition size and file system with Symantec partition manager 8.0.

After that my DOS application was working (I used grub as boot manager) and I could start XP, but was logged out automaticly. After I had read this message, I could boot with a Windows PE system, modified the registry for winlogon userinit to drive G: which was the new XP root file and started XP again.
Most of the registy show C: for a lot of files, so I reinstalled a backup later and made the DOS partition hide before XP start again!
