So XP won't boot. What does ASR add to just booting from
the install disk? Either way you lose whatever was on
the root drive.

My computer wouldn't start today. It couldn't even get to
the DOS text that preceeds XP startup (the little beep
sound). Finally it did. Very gratifying, but now I'm
scared to turn the computer off.

What I would like to know is if it is possible, in such a
situation, to force XP to boot without having to
reinstall all your applications.

You have a hardware problem.

This is the system POST (power on self test), and it has nothing to do with
Windows. This indicates that you have either a faulty piece of hardware
(fails the test) or there is a bad configuration in the system BIOS. Do not
delay in having this checked out by someone who knows about hardware
(knowledgable friend whom you trust or local pc repair shop - not some
godawful office superstore). Hardware problems don't get better on their
own, they need to be addressed promptly.
