Autofill in Outlook

How do you remove an "autofill" email address in Outlook? Old email addresses
keep "autofilling" when I get ready to send an email. There are not in the
Outlook "contacts" folder and I can't find them anywhere else, yet when I
type the first few letters, it fills in with the outdated address.

2 options.

1. To clear the entire cache and start from scratch, do a search for a file
with the extension of .NK2. Delete that entire file.
2. To clear a single entry, as you start typing and the drop down list with
the multiple possibilities appears, use the arrow keys to highlight the
wrong entry and then press the delete key. This will delete the bad entry.

Hi Patricia,
Thanks for answering my question so quickly. My wish is to be able to delete
single entries that have become outdated over time. When I start typing the
email address in Outlook a dropdown box does not appear, the email address
just pops in automatically. In this particular case, the addressee has an old
address and a current address. I am trying to eliminate the old address.

In Outlook email when I go to "new" email and begin to type in the
recipient's email address it does autofill (if there has been previous
correspondence) but no dropdown box appears in the "to" box. Am I looking in
the wrong place?
Thanks, Steve

If there's only one name in the autocompletion cache, see this:

This may help (from a previous post)

Autocomplete / Autofill email addresses.

Folks, this is so simple.....

When ever you have a major change or addition to your email address book and
autocomplete for the new email addresses won't work, simply start a new
email, blank is okay, select ALL of your email addresses to SEND TO, save it
to drafts, delete it from drafts.

So far, this has worked nicely for me since, mmmmm... somewhere around
Office 2000 or so.

TO:, some of my contacts are missing? I've double checked that they have
emails and everything...but they aren't even listed...how do I fix this?

Only contacts that have resolved email addresses will appear in the Address
Book interface when you click To.

So I have to ask...what is a Resolved Email Address?
AND how do I make an email address resolved?

Other interesting thing...some of my contacts...when I press TO...show their
names, but not their email addresses?...but if you click them it populates
their name, doesn't show the address but will send to them?

HELP...

Thanks?

Open a contact record that isn't appearing in the Address Book interface.
Examine the e-mail address field. Is the address underlined? Reenter the
last character of the address and save the contact record again. Does it
apper now?

FAX numbers will also appear in the Address Book, if Outlook can recohnize
them as such, since FAX numbers are legitimate electronic addresses. There
should be a Type column that shows you what type of electronic address the
entry represents, but you may have to scroll to see it or widen the Address
Book window. Also, importing contacts can cause mail addresses to be
unresolved so that entries don't appear.

First off,
Thanks Brian for trying to help.

Now...

I checked that. The email was underlined... I pressed backspace once and
the whole thing erased. I retyped it in, a dropdown box showed it, but I
didn't click on it, I retyped the whole thing out. re-Saved...

Closed and opened outlook...and nothing.

Interesting side note...if I type the email address in the to line, the
email alone shows up...but I'm assuming thats just that auto save feature.

ALSO if I press TO: and get the linked address book the name is NOT there
and there are NAMES that do not show emails?

What is your data store (PST or Exchange mailbox)? How many Contacts
folders do you have? Are they all enabled as address books? Did you try
removing and readding the Outlook Address Book service to your mail profile
(with the appropriate restart between the removal and the readdition)?

B

Braden

Again, Thanks.

PST
743 main contacts - in the main contacts folder - YES it is enabled as a
Outlook Address Book
There are also 3 other contact folders that are not enabled. BUT the ones
that I mentioned with Names/NO Email are in the Main, Enabled Folder.

I have not tried that...because I have no idea what your talking about...
Tell me how and I will?

With regards to proper removal and readdtion, I'd assume that mean not do it
all at once without proper startup and shutdowns between...so yeah I can
handle that...

You don't state your Outlook version, so this is for Outlook 2003 and
because it's done with Outlook closed, there will be no restarts: with
Outlook closed, open the Mail applet in Control Panel, click E-mail
Accounts. Select the radio button labeled "View or change existing
directories or address books" and click Next. Select Outlook Address Book
and click Remove. Click Add, select Additional Address Books, click Next,
select Outlook Address Book, click Next, then Next, then Finish. Close all
dialogues. Start Outlook. Has the behavior changed?

Your suggestion below has been very helpfull, however is there a better way
to edit the entire file instead of using the "drop down list".

Is it possible to locate the .ink2 file in a different directory?
