i have imported my contacts into windows mail ok. windows mail will not
autofill email address's. on outlook express, yahoo, aol, when you start
typing the email address you get a drop down menu with a selection of
address's. i have ticked the automatically fill email address's in the
options. all my contacts are in windows mail, i can see them if i open
contacts. someone please help. more info:- it appears that if I have sent an
email, by typing in the full address, it remembers that address and the
autofill works ok for the contacts that i have "manually" sent an email. i
have over 200 contacts..help

The auto-complete just doesn't work correctly... and when it does, it only
remembers the last 29 addresses you entered.
Windows Mail has not been upgraded for the past year.

You might want to try the newer Windows Live Mail, which works better,
including auto-complete.

You already discovered that WM remembers previously used addresses, that is
all that it remembers, it only remembers a maximum of 29 addresses, the 30th
drops out of the memory.

Why type an address that is in your Contacts Folder?

In the new message window click on the To: it will open your contacts, type
a search in there.

when viewing photographs you get the option on the top toolbar to email,
select the photo, select email, you get an attach window, ok it, it then goes
straight a send mail page where you cannot access your contacts, try it. its
not a big deal but it would be nice and quick, rather than going through the
the other 5 steps to attach photographs.

Windows Mail does not use the contacts list for autocompleting addresses.
Instead, it uses a separate list of the last 29 addresses you sent messages
to. This list is very hard to edit; it's easier to just send messages to 29
addresses you want on the list.

If you want to use the contacts list, don't start typing the address.
Instead,
in the new message window, click on Tools, then Select Recipients.

So I select a photo attachment, it opens in Windows Photo Gallery, in the
top toolbar I select email, I get an Attach dialogue with the option to
change the Picture Size, then a new mail window opens, with the photo as an
attachment, I can add the address now as I described previously.

thanks norman, mac user here trying to adjust to a pc, the memory in windows
mail for storing addressess should be enough for a realistic number of
addresses, they should expand it. i k now i only have to learn a new habit of
clicking on the to but it'san extra move! the other way is better

Autocomplete / Autofill email addresses.

Folks, this is so simple.....

When ever you have a major change or addition to your email address book and
autocomplete for the new email addresses won't work, simply start a new
email, blank is okay, select ALL of your email addresses to SEND TO, save it
to drafts, delete it from drafts.

So far, this has worked nicely for me since, mmmmm... somewhere around
Office 2000 or so.

As long as you don't have more than 29 addresses in your address book, this
should work. The list used for the autocomplete function (which is not the
contacts
list) won't remember any more.

That will, indeed, work for Outlook, all versions, 2000 and later. It will
not work for Windows Mail. When done with Outlook, you create or add to the
..NK2 ("Nickname") file which will hold a large number of addresses. Windows
Mail will only retain the last 29 addresses used.
