autochk.exe

John

When I boot up my computer in XP, before all the Windows
screens start appearing, I get a 2-second screen saying
something about not being able to find autochk.exe.

Any ideas why it can't find it, or what its significance
is? There is an autochk.exe located under
C:\windows\system32, which is 553 KB in size and dated
3/31/2003.

I haven't always had this error message appear.

Thanks,
John

Autochk.exe runs automatically any time you specify that you want to schedule
a disk check to run at startup. See KB article Q216461. Where else does
'autochk' appear on your system?

No, you are thinking about Chkdsk. I've never heard of "autochk."
Any takers on this one?

Unknown's advice is good. See MS KB article -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN- US;218461

Or do a google search.

Thanks for your suggestions Bob & NobodyMan. The MS KB
article seems to apply to Windows 2000. I'm running XP
Pro. The google search was somewhat helpful too. Most
of the people complaining about a similar problem have
their boot sequence go into a loop. I don't have that
problem. Some talk of one of the MS Hotfixes causing a
problem ( KB824105 ). Also, a partition utility (GoBack)
may cause problems. I'm using Acronis True Image. Also,
someone got into trouble messing with their registry.
Duh!

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager

Verify: "autocheck autochk*" the entry should be "autocheck autochk *" with
a space between autochk and the *.

Kelly,
Thanks for your suggestions. I am not too familiar with
the Registry, but I did navigate to where you suggested
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Sessi
onManager) and did not find any entry for anything that
looked like autochk or autocheck. I then did a search in
the Registry for "autocheck" and "autochk" and didn't
come up with anything that looked like what you were
suggesting.

I also went to the URL that you suggested. Most of the
posts had to do with people whose computers wouldn't
boot, apparently because of having an autochk problem.
My computer (XP Pro) does boot ok, and maybe is running
ok. About the same time that the autochk problem started
Outlook 2000 started not being able to open or create
attachments, but I don't know if the two problems are
related. (This is a much more annoying problem than the
autochk problem!!)

Some people on the posts mention that their problem might
be related to using Partition Magic software. I've made
(and replaced) images of my C-drive using Acronic True
Image. Not sure how to determine if that is related to
my concern.

Went to your XP web site. Lots of good information.

Thanks,
John

Any takers on this one?

AutoChk is similar to ChkDsk, except it runs earlier in the boot
process so that it is less likely to trip over files "in use" etc.

Unlike ChkDsk, it has no "look, don't touch" mode.

Often, when you try to ChkDsk, it says it can't do it but will set up
a scan on the next restart. That scan is done by AutoChk.

It's not clear (to me) whether AutoChk.exe is merely a wrapper that
calls ChkDsk, or is a stand-alone app with parallel functionality, or
whether both are just wrappers for some deeper maintenance API.
