Auto Windows Update Question

I thought on my XP that I used to have a feature that it would tell me when
updates were available (i.e. a balloon from the task tray). However, I just
went to the Windows Update site, and it found 5 updates that I didn't
have...

Is this a service or setting that perhaps I inadvertently disabled?

Thanks,
MS

I found where the settings are, and everything is configured to
autoupdate... however, it is still not auto-prompting me as it should. Any
ideas?

Those updates are real recent(a few days), so the auto-update probably just
didn't retrieve them yet. I think it does it on a schedule, not when the
update first comes out.

The service user left-over bandwidth to make your experience on the net as
good as possible. If you use internet for other purposes it prioritises
that. You can find the same baloon setting in the control-panel. If you stay
on the internet for a while they will be downloaded.

Also - Microsoft has publicly addressed the issue of having patches
coming out within close time-frames. (Every few days). From now
on the updates will be accumulated and distributed most likely every
Wednesday. So yesterday's 5 Criticals are probably the way things
on Windows Update will work from now on. Of course if a patch is
considered an immediate threat, I'm sure it would be posted right
away.

You have to enable automatic updates. In XP I go to Help
and Support under the Start Menu, and then choose Windows
Update. Then I have an option Personalize Windows Update.
