Auto Updates freezes on screen

When I try to change Updates from manual to automatic, the window hangs.
Specifically, I go to My Computer/Properties/Auomatic Updates. When I
click that tab, the System Properties window freezes and not even Task
Manager helps. If I click any of the other tabs first, they work OK.
Only Auto Updates causes it to freeze. I have to reboot to get rid of
the window. Suggestions?

Disable the Windows Firewall, (properties of your internet connection) and
try again.

Nothing to do with this problem.

Empty your temporary internet files and and temp folder. Click start > Run >
type in: "msconfig" without quotes > startup startup tab > uncheck any
unncessary programs that might be starting up with the system.

Restart your computer and try again.

Hi,

Start/run services.msc

Scroll to Automatic Updates and double click it. On the general tab, set the
"startup type" to manual. Click apply/ok, reboot if prompted.

Thanks, that seemed to work. While in Services, I started the manual
service, but after a reboot, I checked it again and it was stopped, so I
had to start it again. Why doesn't the "start" setting save?

Hi,

Means one of two things:

a) Something else loading at boot is conflicting with it.

b) A service it is dependent upon is not loading properly. Have you messed
with the services lately?

I run Startup Monitor with only necessary apps checked, so I doubt
that's a problem.

No recent changes to services, although I had to reinstall Windows
Installer about a week ago. It's working OK now. But I just tried to
manually scan for necessary updates, and the MS Update page said I had
to have Automatic Updates on. That seems inconsistent.

Manual means what it says - left off until started manually, either by
you or by a program invoking it. Updates will not do that
unfortunately; you have to have Updating service on Automatic, so it
gets started as the system loads

Thanks...that's helpful to know.
