So I said yes and it started the download, but I can not see the status of
the download. It will ask me before it installs, so I know it is still
downloading now, but how much longer to finish downloading?? It asked me if
I wanted to download these specific updates last night, I said yes and after
about two or 3 hours I just forgot about the invisible download and turned
off my computer. I did have a bad dream that a computer was chasing me down
a dark alleyway, now I think I know why. So today it asked me again about
downloading these and I said yes and now I want to go to sleep. It would be
nice to know how big these updates r and how long the download will take.

Unless the Auto Update icon in the Notification Area has been unwisely
customised to stay in the Always Hide category, the icon should be on show
when downloading begins, and stays. Hover the mouse cursor over it will
give a balloon statement of how much of the total agreed updates has been
downloaded in %.

You can guage how long by noting the total updates in MB (tot them up)
divided by the average downloading speed. Say, 45MB at more or less
5KB/second --- in my case of dial-up connection --- will take 2½hours, if
the downloading process is continuous, without interruptions. This is
almost never the case in daytime when you are also using the computer. It
is not possible for the computer to state how long it would take to complete
the process because of this. My ZoneAlarm traffic meter (the in-coming
traffic) gives me an indication of the ebbs and flow --- no, I don't turn
off this protection even on downloading software.

I agree with Cimex, this re-offer meant that the previous one had never
started; something was amiss.

Like you, I tend to do the automatic downloading overnight, but unlike you,
I don't have bad dreams.

I did not (intentionally anyway) :
"Auto Update icon in the Notification Area has been unwisely customised to
stay in the Always Hide category"
but as soon as I tell it to start downloading the icon does disappear. So
how do I get it back??

Thanks again,
P

Great. Yesterday I shut down, this morning it did not notify me of updates,
so I thought all was done. Just now the icon re appeared listing the same 2
updates. I have been on and off internet all day and now for about 1 hour,
but icon did not appear until I sent that last post. This is 2 weird.

First check that the updates have indeed not been downloaded and installed.
Windows Update Scan
View installation history
Check the installed updates list in the registry, and IE Menu Bar's Help

If download/install fails to start, it is an access problem:
Disable firewall, anti-virus, popup blockers, download manager;
incorrect time and date, language, and any other potential blockers.
More details from MVP Rick Rogers' past post, 4 Oct 2003.

If installed but download offers continue, it is an incorrect repeated offer
issue:
Known glitch, MS is working on it.
Meanwhile, stopping and restarting the Auto Update Services may help.
More details from MVP Sharon F's past post, 15 Mar 2003.

Please ignore last paragraph in my last post referrring to a glitch. I
looked up and checked. The updates you have problems with are the most
recent two, I presume. So the message may well no longer apply. Check in
the microsoft.public.windowsupdate newsgroup to see if there have been any
report of this same issue affecting the two updates. Here is a more
appropriate link, applicable to all updates in general:

I have not encountered the problem you have, although I have found changes
made in the Customize Notification window does not always stick (unrelated
to the current topic under discussion).

I went to ms download scan and it said that I needed these 2. It took 12
minutes to download them. Now I will see if the notification stops (I think
it will).

The download after the scan shows the download, then installation progress.
WHY does not the auto download from the notification area show me this?????

This is by design. If you feel more reassuring with the scan and the
progress meter --- many people do because this gives them more control,
notifying them of immediate downloading and installing difficulty --- you
may like to use this manual method from now on. Then, you have to, and have
to remember to, do the scan fairly frequently yourself. Or, you may like to
link that with the Automatic Update programme, just for notifying you of any
new arrival. I chose this option and also allowed the OS to download
quietly in the background without any human intervention, through the night.

From now on, in your dreams you will be chasing the computer --- for
updates.

Bee.
(I have found my Shangri-La, at the moment, in ntlworld.)

tks

either way, the computers rule !
