I had previously disabled my Automatic Updates in Services. When I tried
updating Windows Defender, I just kept getting errors.

I had thought that at least I could manually update Windows 2000 and all
windows components if I disabled Auto Update, but no go. When I went to
the MS update site (through Start/Windows Update), I received an error
message).

I then switched Auto Updates back to Automatic and started the service
again. The errors were gone and Windows Defender and Windows 2000 were
allowed to check for updates.

Question - What setting can I use so as not have my Auto Updates services
on "automatic", and still update manually?

I know that BITS and COM+ have to be started for updates (correct?).

Can I leave Auto Updates in Services on manual?

All this is correct and as designed. The Service called "Automatic Updates"
must not be disabled, otherwise you will get the errors you have seen. The
Service must be enabled for all type of update functions.

Use control panel "Automatic Updates" to configure Automatic Updates.

Please leave all Services on their settings as installed.
