when you are in outlook and sort by a field. lets say inbox and sent by if
you sort by that field and start to type in a name it automatically goes to
that name as you begin to type. what is this feature called? can it be turned
off? i have one user that the feature used to work and now it does not. he
wants the feature turned back on and has no idea if he turned it off
accidentially or what happened. i can not find what this feature is even
called. any help would be appreciated. thank you.

It's not a feature that can't be turned on or off. You can pretty much use
it anywhere in Windows.
Without any configuration info it is hard to say what has broken it for your
user. Tried resetting the view on that folder already?

the system is windows vista and office 2007. the list would contain hundreds
of contacts and it is easy to just start to type and it will show you the
names. this feature is a great tool for finding stuff fast and slows down
production when you need to scrool through 2000 emails ect.

What feature are you actually referring too?
-select the first name and start typing the first few letters
-place the cursor in the Search box and start typing first few letters?

Aha, I currently don't have BCM installed and configured here. You might get
a faster response when you post in the BCM newsgroup down the hall.

Good luck!

I tried that as well but have not had 1 answer. I believe i have found a work
around though. if you change your view to cards then back to list you can
make the function work again. i also have found that the loss of the function
has to do with going online and offline. i would assume since this just
started hapenning to several machines here in the office that there was a
microsoft update that did something either to sql server or to outlook or
possibly vista since no xp machines have experienced this problem yet.
hopefully microsoft knows what happened and fixes it on the next update. but
for now we at least found a work around this morning. thanks for all you
help. also do you know even what that feature is called. i have been trying
to find it in help and can not find anything about it. i looked at auto sort,
search, quick search, typing search, quick find, ect with out anything.
thanks again have a great day.
