Auto Logon for XP

O

ocar23

I am using XP Pro SP3 and I am having problems with the AutoAdminLogon Value
of 1 for Auto Logon being saved correctly.
At each Bootup, the Value changes back to 0 (Zero) and I have to Logon.
I believe I am using Regedit correctly by selecting AutoAdminLogon,
Highlighting it, selecting Edit and Modify, change to Value, and OK.
Can anyone advise on this please.

Instead of hacking the registry, try using the standard method:

Hello Pegasus,
I looked at this procedure and found the Check Boxes were already clear and
no Pop Up Box appeared to allow me to enter my Account Name.

Please note also, the email link to your Reply does not work. I had to
search for my Post to be able to read it. This happened in the past also.

Thank You.

For the latter - that's a 'choice of ways to read these newsgroups' issue.
If you used a newsreader and access the actual newsgroups instead of a 'web
forum' interface - you would not have the issues (of course - you would not
have the features it offers (and fails to give properly) either.)

For the former - here are the ways you can set automatic logon in Windows
XP...

Automatic Logons:
------
Microsoft method:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315231
(Essentially the same... but different place:
http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/13/ )

Microsoft Method 2:
TweakUI from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

control userpasswords2 method:
1) Go to the Start Menu and the Run box.
2) Type in the following:

control userpasswords2

now click OK
3) In the new Windows that appears select the account you wish to make the
primary logon.
Now uncheck the "Users must enter a username and password..." box.
4) Hit Apply and a dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the selected
users password.
Click OK when you are done...
------

Hopefully that gets you where you are wanting to be.

It is a *good* thing in the user arena to:
1) Have strong passwords.
2) Have more than one administrator level account (with strong passwords).

If it does not work - there may be other information you have left out.
Like, is this machine a member of a domain? Was there some software
installed that changed the logon? How often is the machine scanned for
malware? Is it up to date otherwise? Hardware drivers too?

Hello Pegasus,
I looked at this procedure and found the Check Boxes were already clear and
no Pop Up Box appeared to allow me to enter my Account Name.

So use the TweakUI Powertoy from MS.

See the other responses you received for further suggestions to solve your
problem.

About my EMail address - it is a fake. Few respondents are prepared to
publish their real EMail address, for fear of getting overwhelmed by spam,
and almost none will enter into an EMail discussion with posters. Newsgroups
are meant to be a public forum which means that other people with similar
problems can benefit from the resolution of your problem. You could enter
the words

windows automatic logon

into a Google search box and get ten highly relevant references on the very
first page - because other people have been where you are now!

1. Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2 and press ok.

2. On the Users tab, left click "your user name" then clear the Users Must
Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click
OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the "user name
and password" for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

Added note: (Alex MVP)

If you want to logon to one of the other users, hold down shift as the
system boots up.

Tip:

Add Control UserPasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)
