Auto-Login to network resource...

I've created a shortcut to a network resource that I'd like to be able to
simply double-click the icon and have the login occur in the background so
the user is not prompted for username and password.

Is this possible?

Thanx.

Is this on a domain or a workgroup? If a workgroup, if the user has an
account with identical password on the computer with the resource, he
shouldn't need a password at all. If on a domain, then the user must
have an account on the server and be logging onto the domain.

Please describe your network setup better if you need more specific
help.

The shortcut in question is located on a notebook computer which is not
configured to specifically join the domain.

The user will utilize a VPN connection over the internet to connect to a
server. Then, the user will double-click the shortcut on their desktop which
is nothing more than a link to a subdirectory on a drive on a server within a
domain. The user will have an identical username and password on said server
to allow access. However, as it stands now, the user is prompted for username
and password when clicking the shortcut. The user then has to enter
credentials as follows:

{domain}\{username}
{password}

And then click the [OK] button.

I'm just wondering if there is any way to "embed" the security credentials
within the shortcut so the user isn't prompted every single time.

I remember there used to be a way to do this with internet
explorer...something like...{username}:{password}@{domain}...or something
like that. Can't it work in a similar fashion for this type of connection?

Thanx.
