Auto insert freq used numbers

I have seen this done on template created by other but am unable to create
this myself.

We have a template for a technical document where the document number is the
header. The document number is referenced numerous times elsewhere in the
document and I would like it to automatically insert and update from the
number in the header.

Your assistance is much appreciated.
