Auto Complete in Windows

I have two nearly identical machines, each running XP SP2.

On one, when I select the "Open File" dialog, it auto-completes the "File"
field based on what's in the subdirectory.

(In other words, say I have three files in the subdirectory: "aardvark.jpg",
"absinthe.txt", and "detox.hlp". If I have the Open File dialog open, and
type in "a", the machine will populate the field with "aardvark.jpg"; if I
then type in "b", it will repopulate the field with "absinthe.txt".)

I like that feature, and would like it on the other.

How?

(And I DO have "Auto Complete" turned on in IE, although IE is NOT my
default browser.)

Thanks

.... Click Start > Run
.... Type regedit
.... Expand
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete"
.... Delete the value "AutoComplete" or change its value to 1

Why are you asking the OP to play around with the registry when its not
required ?

I think that your method will not work because it is for Internet Explorer
not Open/Save dialogs.

Yes, not worked but noticed a thing. If AutoSuggest is set to no then just
deleting Autocomplete will not work. You have to set AutoSuggest value to
yes.

I dont know what you are talking about. There is no key called
'AutoComplete' or 'AutoSuggest' under the registry tree:

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete"

However, there is a string called 'Append Completion' , which if set to
'yes' does what the OP needs. Oh by the way, this string gets set to 'yes'
as per my original solution. So there is no need to murk around in the
registry.

Can you tell us what are you basing your solution upon ? Any references ? It
is ideal not to direct users to fool around with the registry until
absolutely required.

There were no keys like "AutoComplete" and "AutoSuggest" but there are values
in right side when you click Autocomplete in left side. These values are not
present on your system may be because you have autocomplete enabled.

I tested that thing and i remember that i picked this info somewhere not just
experimented.

As mentioned in my original post, I have already done that. It does not make
a difference.

Must I have IE as my default browser to use AutoComplete in other software????

And, amending:

I DID change my default browser to IE. Rebooted. No difference.

In regedit, I changed
HKEY_CURRENT_USER=>Software=>Microsoft=>Windows=>CurrentVersion=>Explorer=>AutoComplete,
"AutoSuggest" from "no" to "yes", rebooted, and nothing. So I've changed it
back.)

NOW what?

Thanks

My bad for not calling out the distinction, but that is indeed exactly what I
did before my original post.

It works in Windows Explorer - when I use the Address Bar to navigate around
my subdirectories.

But I turned it off and back on, and it still doesn't do nuthin' when I am
facing Open Dialog boxes.

Can you tell me where in the Registry this is? I can compare my two machines
and see what's different.

(Don't worry, I'll back up my Registry first! - AND I'll report out what I
find.)

Thanks.

Hello,

This also depends upon which application you are talking about. It seems the
Windows Common Dialog box picks up the settings from the registry at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete

If I set the Append Completion string to 'yes' then i get inline
autocomplete within notepad's open dialog box. If i set it to 'no' then the
inline autocomplete is turned off. This registry value is set by IE's inline
autocomplete setting.
