Auto Archive Issue

I've noticed recently that messages that should have been archived by now
according to my settings have not been archived (I archive items older than 1
month every week). After doing some searching, I learned that Outlook
archives based on the last modified date of the message rather than the
receive date. After checking the last modified date, I saw that the messages
had been modified within a month and therefore were not archived.

What I cannot figure out is how these older messages have been modified. I
checked the group that should have been archived most recently if we base it
on receive date, and they were modified on a day when I didn't even turn on
my laptop/access my e-mail at all. I do have AV software so I thought that
could potentially do something, but since I didn't turn on the laptop that
day I don't see how.

Is there any way I can determine how these older messages are being modified?

I'm running Outlook 2007 on Vista SP1 connecting to an account on Exchange
2003 if that helps at all.

This article describes actions that change the modified date:

Not without paying attention to what happens when. However, in an Exchange
environment, since the messages are on the server, it's possible they could
have been modified when you were not logged in.
