Audio problems - windows movie maker 2.1.xxxxx

Have a Sony DCR IP7 digitial camcorder. Used it and Movie Maker version
2.1.XXXX. I am always able to get the video recorded properly, but I cant get
the audio going.

Audio device set to Line in and Input source set to either Stereo Mix or
Line in (doesnt matter - it doesnt work). Video input source is composite.
When I play the clip in WMM, the video plays fine - the audio is just not
there. Pretty sure the solution is something really simple - but please HELP!
