Audio Problem when recording...popping sounds

On any tape that im transferring to the computer the picture is fine but the
audio has a 'popping' or 'crackling' sound sometimes in the background...not
unlike scratches on a record. I know the tapes are fine because if you just
play them or record them directly to a DVD recorder the sounds are not there.
But on the recorded soundtrack on movie maker they are?
