Audio Line In not working?

I need some help getting my computer to playback audio that I plug into
my onboard sound card. I have an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum (nForce 4
chipset) with a RealTek AC97 (ALC850).

Previously if I went into the audio properties and turned the volume for
the 'Line In' up then whatever was plugged in would play over the
speakers. Now, I get no sound. I have the volume turned up, I have the
drivers installed.. I can't get sound to work. Someone please help me..

Double check that you haven't got mute selected

Hello did you make sure the line in section was checked in the playback
properties of your sound card?

Yes I have it checked. I can change the volume in the audio properties,
and I do not have it muted. Any other ideas?

Have you checked both the volume and audio tabs on the "Sounds and Audio
Devices" control panel applet? Does other audio play? While you have the
control panel applet open, check the sounds tab to see if the built-in
Windows sounds work? There are also the obvious "duh" items like are the
speakers plugged in, turned on, and turned if, assuming there's a volume
knob on the speakers?

I have checked all of those. The sound still doesn't play. Yes, windows
sounds play. Audio from anything else plays, volume is up. My default
sound playback device is my realtek audio, which has my speakers hooked
up, plugged in, turned on, and volume knob up. The Line In volume in the
audio properties is up.. the thing that is confusing me is that it used
to work before I reinstalled :(

Thanks

This might sound silly, but did you make sure the thing was plugged in
allthe way and that there is no dirt in the jac or on the plug? are you
getting any kind of buz when you plugg your device in to the line in jack?

I got it working.. seems that the sound manager that comes with the the
realtek drivers had my setup as an 8channel setup, when all I have is
two desktop speakers(which is what i had set in the windows audio
properties). Once I set it to the 2channel setup the sound just kicked
on, and I had my volume all the way up to listen and it scared the hell
out of me. Thanks everyone anyway, it's working now :)

I didn't realize that I had to change that setting in my sound driver
properties. My brother was the one who set my pc up the first time I
installed.
