audio input or microphone

I have a headset with microphone. The ear pieces work,
but I have no clue how to get the microphone to work.
When I check system in control panel or hardware under
system information, I find no reference to the
microphone. What can I do to get a working microphone on
my system?

The microphone would need to be plugged into the microphone jack on the
PC separately. Until the hardware is connected, there is no input for
the software to identify. If there is not a separate plug on the cord
for the microphone then the one plug contains both the headphone AND
microphone connections and is not designed to work with PC sound cards,
and you should aquire a different unit.

You have to un-mute the microphone input in Vloume Control
