Audio Distortion

When playing music with Windows Media Player I am getting distortion when the
volume is turned up.I only noticed it after deleting Real Player because it
kept butting in and I was getting two tunes playing at the same time.I have
re installed Real player in which the audio quality is good but I still have
the problem with the Media Player which is my preferred choice.
Can anybody advise a solution that is reasonably easy to follow
Thankyou

It seems a plug-in is causing the problem. Disable all plug-ins [Tools >
PlugIns] and tell us if this solves the problem.

Thanks for reply'I went into Tools, options, then clicked on plug ins which
came up with a Category column and a Visualisation colume. The "remove" button
was/is greyed out except for the one I was able to remove-Ithink it was media
connect-I should of made a note before removing--however the sound is still
the same, i feel somehow i have not followed your suggestions
properly.Looking at your message again you use the word disable , I assume
this to be the remove button.Thankyou for your time.

I've tried trouble shooting sound in windows xp to no avail. However using
your 2nd suggestion to make WMP10 the default player i think has helped a
bit though the quality of sound still lag's behind Realplayer.I was suprised
to find the relevant box not checked. thankyou for your help.

I would try opening the mixer and checking the MUTE box on all sources
other than the main WAV and MIDI inputs. In particular, mute the LINE-IN
and MICROPHONE. See of that helps.

If all else fails, try simply reinstalling WMP 10.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/2/A/12A31F29-2FA9-4F50-B95D-E45EF7013F87/MP10Setup.exe

[be careful, MS's latest links often lead you to bring down wmp 11 beta 2
when you think you're getting wmp 10].

the above full-install will reinstall wmp 10 for you, UNDOING any
additional hotfixes for it that you may have installed; this is a good
thing, those hotfixes often mess things up - don't install any of them
unless you have the exact problem they address.

I am saying to uncheck all options under [ Tools > Plug-ins ] menu.
