Audio Device....?

OK. I don't like this particular computer, because EVERYTHING is wrong with
it. I can't make yahoo messenger connect to its servers, can't get internet
explorer to load--it only connects to my homepage. BUT that's not why I'm
writing. Now, on top of everything else that malfunctions on here, every time
I try to play music I am told that the audio device is wrong. First of all,
what the heck is an audio device--sound card, right?--and how do i go about
figuring out exactly what's wrong and fixing it?

A very comprehensive rant, but the only thing we know is that it is a
"computer" (Mac, PC, Sun???) with an audio problem... hundreds of
thousands of possibilities.

details please, the more the better, they are essential...

for example, the exact text in the "won't work" and what application,
what os, what make/model, kitchen sink, etc, etc,
