No Audio Device Found

I can't get the sound card to work, or even be recognized, in a Compaq
desktop of a friends. I checked the BIOS and the on-board audio was enabled.
I even put in another sound card I had hanging around in case the on-board
audio stopped working. Still, no audio device is found. What am I missing?

Set BIOS to disable on board audio,install sound card to another PCI slot,
start pc.If still doesnt after,power off pc,remove battery,move CMOS jumper
pin on the board from 1-2 to 2-3 for .45 seconds or so,then back to 1-2,
install battery,start pc..You'll need to reset BIOS settings on start-up,as
all
will return to default,as it was from mfg...

With the PCI card installed, can you see it listed in Everest ?
Check under DevicesCI Devices.

Sisoftware Sandra can also list hardware. Check the download link
under the "Lite" column.

When I had a bad bus connection between my sound card and the PCI connector,
the card still showed up in Everest, but the enumeration values were wrong.
That prevented the driver from loading, and gave the New Hardware wizard.

Fitting a pci soundcard means that you MUST switch off and on-motherboard
sound chip !
XP definately doesn't like seeing two sound chips.
