any suggestions on this problem. i have a P4 2.3 with a
DvD player and CDwriter. both drives seem to work just
fine except neither will play audio CD's either on
Windows Media player or Realone. i am baffled so any help
would be appreciated.

thanks

Do you mean the cd isn't recognized or there is just no sound? Does explorer
see the cd?

explorer sees the CD, but media player will not play them
and realone explorer will not see it.

Sounds like a codec problem. Try updating or reinstalling the drivers for
yuor sound card, see if that helps.

Best guess is that this is a drive that does not handle digital audio
extraction very well, or for other reason has it set to analog mode, and
you are missing the fine cable from the drive direct to the sound card,
for the analog signal to travel over.

Check at WMP Tools - Options - Devices. Highlight the drive, take
Properties and make sure that Digital playback is selected. Also in
Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager, find the drive in
CD/DVD drives, double click and on the Properties page ensure also that
'Enable digital' is selected. If that does not work out, make sure you
have an analog cable installed
