Audio Balance Problem

In the past few days my computer has developed a problem where when I'm
listening to a podcast or something, the balance may start ok, but after
awhile it will drift to the left. Then sometimes after a while the
balance will bounce back and forth, but mainly it just stays over on the
left side.
Can anyone suggest how to fix this?
I run XP on a Compaq Presario that is a more than a few years old, the
hard drive was replaced a few years ago.

Open device mgr,scroll to sounds & expand the tree,R.click on the sound
hardware & select "uninstall" (do not restart pc,do this for all sound
hardware),
once thru,close out,shutdown pc.If you have a PCI sound card,now would be
the time to remove & clean the installation contact tabs (a pencil eraser
works
well),reinstall,restart pc,xp will reinstall on restart...Also,unplug power
before.
