Attempting to instal XP Home Edition, with little success

Hi there, first off, thanks for reading this in advance! Anyway, i move into
my student house soon and instead of buying a new PC, thought id do up my
brothers old one (about 5 years old). Itt was running Windows 98, but over
the years had really started to get bad. So i thought id install XP.

During the instalation, a few things didnt work (it said files couldnt be
found) and when it go to the screen where it says how long is left
installing, it stuck on 39minutes, before coming up with some fatal error.
Quite annoyed, i simply turned it off and thought id try later.

Now, i tried turning it on, and its clearly remembered the instalation and
go to the very same point, this time i decided to read the errors lol.

First off, it asked me this:

"The file 'asms' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 CD is needed

Type the path where the file is located, and then click ok"

beneath this, was a drop down box with the following already highlighted:

"Copy files from:
GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM\1386" however, the 1 in "1386" may have been a
capital "i"...

I pressed ok, and nothing happens, so after pressing it a few times i
pressed cancel, and it went to the 'fatal error' screen again:

"An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing" View log
file...

"LOG FILE

Setup had problems registering the following OLE control DLL:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\initpki.dll

----

Thee signature for Windows XP Home Edition Setup is invalid. The error code
is 800b0001. Unkown trust provider"

Now, i can assure this is a legitimate XP Home Edition CD, no dodgyness
there. Im just wondering what the problem is. Obviously it could just be that
the computer is too bloody old to acknowledge anything, as in the mobo or...
something else could be wrong!

Or i was also wondering if it could be the CDROM drive (scratched or
something). I thought this, and plugged in a portable CD drive, but
obviously, since it isnt installed it doesnt pick it up via USB.

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot for any replies.
Tom.

Hi Tom,

If you can get your hands on an IDE CD/DVD ROM drive, swap it for the
current drive and try running setup. That would be the first step that I'd
try.

If that doesn't work, have a look at these MSKB articles for further
troubleshooting advice:

"The file 'Asms' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed" error message
when you install Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=311755

"Error Code 800b0001: Signature for Windows 2000 Professional Is Invalid"
Error Message When Running Setup
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297000
(although the above article references Windows 2000, it may be equally
applicable to WINXP)

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately i tried putting in a new CD drive (well
another old one i have) and its done the same thing. Basically it tries to
resume setup, and comes up with the exact same problem

SO, i tried using the NTFS help you put, i did these:

---------

1. When you receive the error message, press SHIFT+F10 to start a command
session.
2. Type regedit.exe, and then press ENTER.
3. Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
4. On the File menu, click Load Hive, and then load
%Windir%\System32\Config\System.sav.
5. When you are prompted to specify a name, type Test."

--

i got to there ok, and then when it asks me to locate the
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Test\ControlSet1\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
key, i didnt find the exact key (couldnt find any with E965 in it) but i
deleted all the other UPPERFILTERS AND LOWERFILTERS that i found, as it asks.

Then it asks to do this:

--

9. Click File, and then click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
10. If the path in the error message is the correct drive letter for the
CD-ROM drive, click OK to continue the Setup program.
11. If you receive the error message again, the Setup program cannot
correctly read from the CD-ROM drive, or the path information is incorrect.
In this case, restart your computer and let the Setup program resume.

--

So i quitted it, and then for the CDROM i didnt know what to put, so left it
as the GLOBALROOT thing, and it didnt work. I tried typing E:\ and C:\ but it
did the same thing (nothing). I tried restarting as it says in 11, and now,
it started trying to load the screen, and instead game up with a blue screen
with white writing saying:

"STOP: d0000017 Unknown Hard Error.
Unknown Hard Error"

Any ideas?

The unknown hard error, combined with the previous errors mentioned (namely,
Setup had problems registering the following OLE control DLL:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\initpki.dll and The signature for Windows XP Home
Edition Setup is invalid. The error code is 800b0001) leads me to think that
an outdated BIOS may be the root of the problem. If there is an updated
BIOS, you should be able to download the update file plus find instructions
for performing a successful BIOS update at the motherboard manufacturer's
website. Please exercise caution, as a failed update may, depending on how
old/cheap the motherboard, render the computer useless until you replace the
BIOS chip or entire motherboard.

So you feel a new motherboard, or updated motherboard may well be the solution?

Hmm, i shall have to think whether buying a new computer might well work out
just aswell to be honest. Thanks, i'll let you know what i do!
