Hi there, first off, thanks for reading this in advance! Anyway, i move into
my student house soon and instead of buying a new PC, thought id do up my
brothers old one (about 5 years old). Itt was running Windows 98, but over
the years had really started to get bad. So i thought id install XP.
During the instalation, a few things didnt work (it said files couldnt be
found) and when it go to the screen where it says how long is left
installing, it stuck on 39minutes, before coming up with some fatal error.
Quite annoyed, i simply turned it off and thought id try later.
Now, i tried turning it on, and its clearly remembered the instalation and
go to the very same point, this time i decided to read the errors lol.
First off, it asked me this:
"The file 'asms' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 CD is needed
Type the path where the file is located, and then click ok"
beneath this, was a drop down box with the following already highlighted:
"Copy files from:
GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM\1386" however, the 1 in "1386" may have been a
capital "i"...
I pressed ok, and nothing happens, so after pressing it a few times i
pressed cancel, and it went to the 'fatal error' screen again:
"An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing" View log
file...
"LOG FILE
Setup had problems registering the following OLE control DLL:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\initpki.dll
----
Thee signature for Windows XP Home Edition Setup is invalid. The error code
is 800b0001. Unkown trust provider"
Now, i can assure this is a legitimate XP Home Edition CD, no dodgyness
there. Im just wondering what the problem is. Obviously it could just be that
the computer is too bloody old to acknowledge anything, as in the mobo or...
something else could be wrong!
Or i was also wondering if it could be the CDROM drive (scratched or
something). I thought this, and plugged in a portable CD drive, but
obviously, since it isnt installed it doesnt pick it up via USB.
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot for any replies.
