"Attempt to access invalid address"

I'm trying to run older Windows games on my copy of
Windows XP, but I'm having a problem accessing them: some
programs (particularly setup files) give me the error
message "Attempt to access invalid address" everytime I
click on them. Perhaps I could play the games if I were
able to install them but I can't get them open at all.
They seem to work on my mum's laptop also with XP
installed. Could anybody please help me with this?
