Attaching external USB device crashes XP Pro SP2

I am running XP Pro SP2 on a new hp (came installed w/SP1). I did not try
this prior to upgrade so I don't know if it is specific to SP2 or not.

When I attached an external USB device (I tried 2 hard drives and 1 flash
drive) my machine crashes and reboots. After the reboot, once everything is
loaded, the machine crashes and reboots again. When the crash occours a blue
screen (not the typical blue screen of death) pops up that looks to have a
lot of text on it, but it flashes up so quickly that I have no hope of
reading what it says.

HP thinks I should reset my CMOS. Anyone here have any thoughts?

Thank you

1st - click on Control Panel - System - Advanced - Click Settings in Startup
& Recovery section - remove the check for 'Automatically restart' and OK
your way out. Now when you get the blue screen you will be able to see the
STOP message. Post back with that full stop message & someone should be
able to give you some advice.

Ron,

Holly cow, I completly forgot I had posted this question... but I am still
haveing the same problem. Actually, it seemed to go away for awhile but then
came back. I removed the check for 'Automatically restart' as you suggested.
The full text of my big blue screen is as follows.

If this is the first time you have seen this Stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure all new hardware or software is properly installed. If
this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for
any windows updates you might need.

If problem continues, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you
need to use Sage Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer,
press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

See this link for more information on that stop code. Appears to be a
driver or RAM issue.
