ATI RADEON 9700 Pro Driver issue

I've checked the ATI website and see that there are updated drivers to the
Catalyst 6.8 [updated on 08/18/06] but after downloading it Windows Update
tells me to update the drivers and uninstalls the Catalyst Control Center
Package. I am unsure what to do as I am getting an increased about of 'Stop'
errors from the the card, from programs that NEVER caused such problems
before.

I am seeking help from here before I consider the possiblity of getting the
card replaced.

The card is a 128 DDR ATI 9700 Pro /w TV-Out

You need .NET 2.0 for the CCC program to work. The best place for ATI help
is the forums at http://Rage3d.com

The 9700 isnt supported with ati last 2 or 3 updates,the list is posted for
the
catalyst.However youre best bet is to install the control-panel and its
software/
drivers from end of last year or around that time,locate last
control-panel,after
its installed,update the drivers only starting with 6. The current catalyst
soft-
ware w/o control-panel lacks performance when compared to control-panel.

The Radeon 9700 family is still supported by the latest Catalyst drivers.

It is the Radeon 9250 and below that are not supported (ie cards that are
not DirectX9 cards)

Don't get hardware driver updates from the windows update site (unless
it's MS hardware). Ignore those. Only get updates for hardware from
the device manufacturer's site or the computer OEM site if it's a large
OEM like Dell or HP.

Are you fully updated from Windows update? .net is needed for the full
install of the catalyst. I have a 9700 pro TFT/LCD monitor so I just use
the drivers without the control center. (low speed display drivers only).
The drivers from windows update are the same except they may be a
month or so behind.
