Ati 9200 versus 9200se

Peter Patershuk

Hi to all,
I am going to update the video card in my computer, because it is old
and there is no XP support. The question is what card ? I do only a few
games and I am more interested in a card that is an all round use card and
would be good or better to work with photos and photo managing programs.
I am looking at the ATI and third party makers. I am open to other makes
or models. The models that seem right are ATI 9200 or [9200SE stripped down
version] the 9200 is $30.00 more. The 9200 has 128 ram and a 128 bit
interface and runs at 250 MHz, the 9200 has 128 ram with a 64 bit interface
and runs at 200 MHz.
The computer is a P4 1.5 with 512 of SD ram. the card coming out is a
RIVA TNT 64 / 32 ram. Also use a canon flat bed scanner. I have looked at
alot of reviews and they seem partisan for a host of reasons.

Thanks for your time Peter.

ATI 8500, 8500LE and 9100 are the same chip
9000 is a slightly stripped down version of that chip.
9200 is an 9000 that supports AGP 8X.
So go 9100

I'm currently using a Sapphire ATI 9100 128MB.

I would stay away from the SE, its really slow. I just bought a couple of
them (ST Labs brand) and took them back. If money is an issue look at the
64 meg versions of the 9000 or 9200. I have a 9000 pro 64 meg card in one
of my boxes and I love it. The display is very crisp in both 2D and 3D apps
and it really flies (for a card in this class), 9000 ish 3dmark 2001
scores. If your not big into gaming you'll get more from the extra clock
speed than you will from the extra ram.

If you go with a third party card, get recomendations from someone who has
that brand and check the return policy just incase you get a fuzzy one.
Doing text work and photo editing is no fun with a fuzzy display.

Thanks for the response,
I just did a search with the local small business shops and one place
has a Sapphire ATI 9100 128 mg card for $130.00 Canadian dollars. I think I
will get this one to get as my motherboard only runs up to 4x AGP so
anything higher is a waste. Is that the right conclusion. Thanks
Peter.

Correct.

I've read good things about the 9100's. I'm not sure what speed its
clocked at, I think it may be clocked slower than the 9000 or the 9200 but
has 4 pipeline constuction instead of 2. If your after more gaming
power you may also want to consider going with the 9600 as it is clocked
higher and is a directX 9 card.

A better card is a better card. 8x and 4x AGP are absoeffinglutely
meaningless.

9600 SE 128DDR goes for about 120eur around here.

Right, I get...I admit that particular post was a bit on the long side. I
usually keep one or two of the earliers posts in my reply, because it helps
readers to understand what I'm referring to. Slight oversight...
