At Least FIVE Anti-Spyware Programs

D. Spencer Hines

Do you honestly expect folks to install at least FIVE different Anti-Spyware
programs, keep them updated, monitor them and constantly tweak each one as
required?

DSH
[...]
There is no one software that cleans and immunizes you against
everything. Antivirus software - you only needed one. Firewall, you
only needed one. AntiSpyware - you will need several. I have a list and
I recommend you use at least the first five.

First - make sure you have NOT installed "Rogue AntiSpyware". There are
people out there who created AntiSpyware products that actually install
spyware of their own! You need to avoid these:

Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites

Also, you can always visit this site..

LATEST version from the page given!)

No. We expect everybody to practice Safe Hex so they won't get infected in the first place.

However, too many < censored > get computers hook them up without taking precautions and --
wham. They are infected.

Perhaps, personally I load customer's machines with AdAware, Spybot,
MS-AntiSpyware (Defender) & several URL's for on-line scans. I've
now gone as far as to create a "Security" Toolbar with all these tools on
a prominent place on the TaskBar to help customers remember to update
and use them regularly.
Threats change & evolve constantly - there is no Static type of solution
that will keep them at bay. The Internet is a dangerous place to play with
no proper protections.

Madness...I only use Ad-Aware and it never even finds a bad cookie. I used
to use Spybot as well but it never found anything either so I removed it.

If you practice safe surfing and properly configure your browser you won't
get malware.

Naw, I usually just replace IE with Firefox, install Grisoft's AVG,
install MS AntiSpyware, and enable the Windows Firewall. Then I make
sure that Windows Update, the AV, and MS AntiSpyware are set to update
automatically...and MS Antispyware not to prompt for anything.

That takes care of 99% of problems for most of the machines I work on,
and it's pretty automated.

As in medicine, it seems that there are disases for which there are
established cures. Now we have "viruses" on computers for which, like many
real viruses, there are no known cure. At this point every man and his dog
claims to have the only true cure. During the Great Plague (1665) it was
apparently a good thing to carry around a posy of herbs to ward off the
sickness. And today everyone is making money producing "cures" which may be
no better than the herbs. One day, someone will come up with the virtual
equivalent of penicillin and then there will only be one cure.

Clearly you don't or shouldn't need five programs. This is redolent of the
obsessive. But perhaps having two programs available that you can run every
once in a while may be no bad thing until the day the real cure emerges.

Should, but I really try to setup customers with minimal work to run
the tools. They only have to get AdAware updates as Spybot &
MS-ASW can auto update. I just tell them that if any MS-ASW
alerts on Hosts comes up to Block.

For antispyware, I have SpySweeper running continuously, auto update.
Every two weeks after updating I run: Adaware, Spybot, Spyware
Blaster(update), Microsoft antispy, and safety.live.com.
That makes 6, plus running AVG antivirus with auto updates.
I also backup my computer using Casper each week, and I backup Outlook
Express weekly using ABF and XP is updated monthly.
Safe hex here - Have a nice day!

It doesn't really matter what others do, what matters is that *you* protect
*your* machine to a level that *you* feel is adequate. If you feel one
program is sufficient that is fine.

And if someone else thinks they need five that is fine too. Even with ten
pieces of software it won't affect your machine.

Make *your* own choice. What I have on my machine (and what others have on
their machines) doesn't affect your machine.

the tools. They only have to get AdAware updates as Spybot &
MS-ASW can auto update. I just tell them that if any MS-ASW
alerts on Hosts comes up to Block.

There is no one software that cleans and immunizes you against
everything. Antivirus software - you only needed one. Firewall, you
only needed one. AntiSpyware - you will need several. I have a list
and
I recommend you use at least the first five.

First - make sure you have NOT installed "Rogue AntiSpyware". There
are
people out there who created AntiSpyware products that actually
install
spyware of their own! You need to avoid these:

Hosts files really drag down the performance of a boxen, therefore
not a viable solution.

I have 4 as well, the last time they ever caught any positives was when I
installed the programs. Also, I use IE for everything since I believe I have
secured it properly. Also I am sitting behind a NAT router which protects me

<snipped my blurb that was quoted>

If they came here *with* spyware - yes.

Why? Multiple answers:
- They are unlikely to suddenly change their surfing habits - they will get
re-infested.
- To properly cleanup the mess they have - they will need more than one,
likely more than two - and possibly more than three.
- Immunization. Since I know they are unlikely to change their habits -
two of the first five (remember - I suggest the *first* five - not
roll-your-own) do nothing more than install registry values that will
basically keep you from visiting some of the worst pages out there.
- Subsets and Supersets. If there was one that caught and eliminated
everything - my list would grow shorter. There isn't. I have had luck with
those first three getting most things - and what those won't get, number 6
and 7 usually flushed out. I don't suggest (off the cuff) they install and
use #6 or #7 (CWShredder and HijackThis) because those take a little
knowledge - well - at least HijackThis does. I may rethink and say "At
least the first 6" from now on. *grin* Or I might remove "Bazooka"
altogether. Usually - if it finds something - it was before AdAware and
Spybot ran - and then it could be ran again after those two ran and find
nothing.

Do I expect them to keep them updated? No - not really. They will likely go
back to their bad habits and then - when things start slowing down again -
review the same document and rescan. Or maybe they will learn something and
stop doing something that caused the problem in the first place.

Do I expect them to monitor the applications? Definitely not. Nothing to
monitor. These run only when told to run - not all the time. What would
they be monitoring?

Tweak them as required? Yes. Because if they get into trouble again, it is
their own fault. They have the tools installed - they likely gained some
knowledge just by using them the first time and being amazed at what was
found (you know - I have actually serviced a machine where Spybot found 9019
entries - none of them cookies?!) and possibly - because they saw all
that - pay better attention the second time around.

It won't happen to everyone. There is always that one child that touches
the hot stove - jerks away crying and come hell or high-water - will be
touching that stove again tomorrow - just to see if it is okay this time.

If they cannot be helped - then so be it. I contributed my part.

If they want to be completely safe, yes, at least at this point. No one app
can protect you from or find/remove all hijackware.

Your answer is BS. It depends on how the host file is used. It can indeed
be a viable solution.
