Asus Radeon 9600 XT Settings (Help)

Hello

Maybe someone can help me out. I just had a system built (They put the
motherboard, cpu, fan, memory and tower together for me) for me. They did
the main components and I did the hard drives, floppy, dvd drives and
cables. This is my current system.

Motherboard: Gigabyte 7NNXP (Latest Bios)
CPU: AMD XP 3200+
Ram: 1 gig Corsaid (2 x 512 meg) 3200 DDR Ram
Power Supply: Enermax 460watt (EG465P-VE)
Monitor: KDS VS-195 19" monitor (1152 X 864) (Highest 32bit) (85 Hertz)
OS: Windows XP Pro SP1
Sound card: Sound blaster Live Platinum 5.1
Scanner: Microtek ScanMaker 6800
Scanner: Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED (Film Scanner)
Ethernet Card: Realtek Ethernet Card
Floppy Drive, Pioneer DVD Reader, Pioneer DVD A06 (Writer)

Hopefully I have given you enough information so you can try an help me
out. Last week I bought the new Asus Radeon 9600XT video card to see if it
would solve my problems with my MSI FX5200 T-128 video card.

I had the MSI FX-5200 T-128 video card which I replaced because I was
having refresh problems (I guess that is what its called but not sure)
where if I loaded up a program the taskbar would turn a solid color and
the icons would disappear. Also durning bootup the screen would be real
crappy looking. I use Photoshop 7 a lot and when I was booting that up 5
seconds into the bootup of photoshop the whole screen would turn white and
the taskbar would turn a solid color. After it was finished loading up the
screen would return back to normal and I could see the taskbar with the
icons.

I talked to a tech person at ATI and he told me it was the video card that
I had was not a high performance videocard like the ATI Radeon
9600XT. ATI recommended I buy there video card but I bought the Asus one
as it was rated higher and better than the ATI version of the same card.

I bought the Asus Radeon 9600XT video card and I am having the same
problems with this video card as I did my old one. I uninstalled the MSI
video drivers and rebooted the system and installed the Asus WHQL Display
Driver, I updated DirectX to Version 9.0a, & I installed the AGP GART
Driver (I have the Nvidia Chipset on my Gigabyte 7NNXP motherboard.

After doing all this my display is no better than my old video card. I
still have the same problems. I don't believe it's the card but a software
or configuration problem. I've already done everything that they suggested
and no luck.

This was the response back I got from Asus on my problem:

It's very important on the installation of drivers on your system. We
haven't had any known problems with this videocard, or it's performance.
On the driver cd, you have the videocard driver, wdm capture driver,
directX, and digital vcr. All of those things must be installed, for the
card to perform at it's best. The other things that are important, are the
installation of your motherboard drivers. Upon first installing the
motherboard, you need to start out with just your videocard, memory,
processor, and drives installed. Install the operating system, and then
once that's complete you install your motherboard chipset drivers first,
followed by any other onboard device, and then videocard driver last. Once
doing that, you should have no problems. Customer mentions that the
problem only occurs within windows. It also happens on another motherboard
that he has. That really is an indication that you're having a software or
driver issue. Check for irq sharing. Strip the system down, remove any pci
cards, and try again. If you continue to have problems then please call us
back

Any help would greatly be appreciated?

I heard the last 2 versions of the Omega ATI drivers fixed a "refresh"
problem. Have you tried them?

I have the same card as you and I am running the Omega 3.9 drivers
and they work great. I am waiting to read more people's reports on the
4.1 Omega drivers before I try them.

Steve,

I haven't tried the TV out feature and would not even no where to begin on
that. I have been trying to follow an other post on here about Driver
Heaven so I might try that later.

Does any one have any suggestions on me using the Driver Heaven program and
the steps that I should use. Should I uninstall all the programs that I
installed from the Asus CD (maybe in safe mode) then reboot and use this
software program.

My computer is running fine other than the video card problem so I don't
want to screw something else up.

Faxcap,

Thanks for responding back. This is the first time I have heard of these
drivers. I did a search on google.com for the Omega ATI Drivers and came
up with this site www.omegacorner.com/

I used the utility caleld DH ATI File V4.1 which I got from
www.driverheaven.net and it says I have the Catalyst 3.9 drivers I thought
Asus wrote there own drivers or do they use ATI Catalyst drivers.

I just went to the Omega website and downloaded the Omega 4.1 drivers. I
will wait a few days to see what people are saying about them. What other
procedures do I have to do to get rid of my old drivers. I see that there
is also a utility called SmartGart Uninstaller
http://www.omegacorner.com/index_ati.html should I also run this program
when I go to uninstall everything from Asus/ATI then start over.

www.Omegacorner.com has some suggested Performance Bios Settings did you
change those settings in your bios to get the best results from the Omega
drivers.

My handle for AOL instant messenger is SylvesterMycat, Yahoo Messenger is
MichaelSBend30. I would love to hear from anyone that is using the Asus
card and using the Omega Drivers.

Thanks for everyones help

As far as I know Asus used ATI drivers that Asus has tweaked. They
have been showing the same v7.95 drivers on the Asus site since I
bought my card. I had some problems with the Asus drivers. They were
stable but the "look" of some of the scenery was poor in Microsoft
Flight Simulator 2004. I tried the ATI Catalyst 3.9 drivers and they
were slightly better than the Asus drivers but I was still not happy
with them. I switched to the Omega 3.9's and they have been
excellent. So good in fact I am in no rush to update to the 4.1's
until I get more feedback from other FlightSim users.

To tell you the truth at this stage you may know more about that than
I do. :) I must read up on what Omega has to say about UART.

Not really. I just loaded them after un-installing the ATI 3.9's.

If the Omega site still offers the Omega 3.9 drivers you may want to
grab them also.

FaxCap,

Hello. Well I just decided to install the Omega ATI 4.1 drivers. I spent
about an hour uninstalling and doing everythign that a few people recommend
on here. I still have the same problems. Oh well. I did a search but was
unable to find the Omega ATI 3.9 drivers.

Can you tell me how you have your driver set up. I have everything set up
as default. LIke OpenGL, Direct3D, Overlay, SmartGart, VPU Recover, Color,
Displays.

I have a 19' KDS VS-195 monitor the resolution is set at 1152 X 864 with
the refresh rate set at 60 hertz. I have no idea if the Monitor refresh
rates have anything to do with my problem.

I wonder if I install another 1 gig of ram if that would help out at all.
I currectly have 1 gig in my system now. What motherboard do you have. I
have the Gigabyte 7NNXP motherboard.

Well kind of depressing after spending most of the day trying to figure out
what the problem is and I am no better off.

Take care talk to u later.

I think you are:

1. Missing some mainboard drivers.
2. Have conflicting software. Do a driver cleaner to get rid of your old
drivers from the previous card.

I tried the new Omega drivers and had some problems with FS9. The 4.1 ATI
drivers work fine. You should have no problems with the card. Frankly it
doesn't matter which company label is on the card as long as it is a
9600XT.\

I'm quite sure Omega keeps an archive of their drivers. Take another
look or ask on their forums.

I have VPU Recover OFF

Is there an INF for that monitor on the KDS web site?

Oh hell....1 gig is MORE than enough.

I know what you are going through, M......I've been there before.
Remember....the order you install all your drivers (motherboard,
video, etc) is important on some boards.

You might want to try the Gigabyte comp. motherboard newsgroup.
Ask there as it might be a problem known to that model board or
chipset.
