Hi, I want to assign the drive letter B to my DVD/CR r/w. Surely this is
possible? If so, how?
I can map network shares to B but disc management will not allow B for the
DVD.

Any help appreciated, I couldn't find anything pertinent in the kb.

I don't think so. Drive letter B comes from the same cable as that which is used for drive letter A namely the floppy.. No changing that. You cannot change drive letter assignments for A-C in drive manager if C is your %systemdrive%

there's no place like 127.0.0.1

- Run regedit.exe
- Navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
- Locate DosDevices\B:
- Delete DosDevices\B: if it exists
- Rename \DosDevices\E: to DosDevices\B:
(if E: is your DVD drive)
- Reboot

By the way: If you wish to increase the exposure of your
posts, use cross-posting (list several groups in the address
field, separated by semi-colons). Do not multi-post, as it
wastes everybody's time.

You can actually change any drive letter via the registry. Some well-known
Win2000 logon problems require you to change drive drive letter C:.

Thanks for your reply George.

What I did learn from my reading in the kb is that it's the OS (in this case
win2k) which assigns drive letters to the devices rather than the BIOS or
other firmware. As I said in my OP, I /can/ map a network drive to B.

I think it follows then that the 'rules' are either hard coded into the
kernel or defined via the registry. I'm hoping the latter and that someone
may be able to tell me where :)

Thanks Pegasus, that worked a treat. I though it theoretically possible,
just didn't know where to go.

Yes, sorry 'bout that, I posted first on the other ms pub ng before I
discovered this one.

cheers,

I didn't say you couild not do it carte blanche. I said from Drive Manager.

Yeah me too. When I'm wrong it's always good to have it made clear. Really thanks.
