Aspiring Newbie Networker - ADSL modem and other questions

I want to network my desktop PC to a laptop in a P2P simple connection
using a cross-over cable so that I may transfer files between these
machines - I don't require to enable network access on this hook-up.

The desktop has XP Pro SP1 and the laptop has W2K Pro with SP2.

Both have Administrator rights.

Both have network cards installed and the desktop connects to the Web
through an ADSL modem. This machine also has a 56K dial-up modem
still installed from the days when I used dial-up connections.

The laptop also has a dial-up modem.

Both machines are in the same workgroup , called "WORKGROUP" , the
respective names of the machines are "dtop1" & "ltop1"

TCP/IP is installed on both and the setting " obtain an IP address
automatically " is selected on both.

TCP/IP , however , is not the only protocol installed on both
machines.

When I now connect both computers with the crossover cable I expected
to be able to " see " the other machine s from the other connected
machine.

When , on the laptop ( W2K ) , I select RUN and then type "
\\dtop1\$c" , I get the message " \\dtop1\c$. No network provider
accepted the network path "

Similarly , when this is done on the desktop( XP Pro) I get a similar
reply ( actually "..the network path not found .."

Can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong here or anything I've omitted
doing ?

There is a firewall installed on the desktop FWIW.

Try using the real IP addresses rather than names eg \\192.168.0.1\c etc.
If this works then examine your HOSTS file and make sure the names you are
using are listed. If they are not then the mappings you are asking for are
probably being searched for on the internet rather than your local network.


Also make sure the passwords for ADMINISTRATOR are the same on each machine.
