What you need to do is to log in normally(if possible)
and reset the password for Administrator.
Here's how: type lusrmgr.msc in the run line and a
console should open up called Local Users and Groups.
In the left pane click on Users,
now in the right pane left-click on Administrator and
select Reset Password.
This will work provided you are logged in under an
account with administrative privileges.

hey mate:thanks for responding.it looks to me as if this will reset desktop
user account not os administrator password.

All it will do is reset the Administrator password. Now
if you have logged on as Administrator(I doubt it), and
encrypted files then you would lose access to those
files. Since you most likely did not, then go ahead and
reset the password. Good Luck!

From "http://www.theeldergeek.com"
Recovery Console Password-
On many XP installations you can't start the Recovery Console because it
won't recognize your password. This registry edit causes the Recovery Console
not to ask for a password. This works for both XP Home and XP Professional.
Start | Run | Regedit
Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1
Exit Registry and Reboot
