Arranging the desktop icons

I have over 100 icons on my desktop, arranged just the way I want them.
Every so often, for reasons not entirely clear to me, they manage to get
jumbled up. I then have to spend considerable time rearranging them.

How can I have the computer memorize the exact layout I decide on, and go
back to that arrangement after the desktop gets screwed up, or I add or
subtract and icon, etc? Some means of recovering my icon layout that doesn't
require a full system restore.

Thanks a bunch,
