Are you too stupid to surf?

A telco talk comprehension examination, then, for
telephone users? Computers are like bicycles.

Sir George, that was an execllent article. Unfortunately,
the vast majority of current internet users ARE to stupid
to surf! And too stupid to drive a car! That is why the
law says they have to learn stuff before they take their
written and road driving tests.

I say: Put the ball in the ISP's court. Make them, by law,
check the hard drive of the potential subscriber for
approprite protective software, just like you have to have
proof of insurance to register your car. Just like liquor
purveyors have to check ID's. Of course, as trusting as so
many people are, the aggressively defensive software they
require in order to be safe has probably not been
developed yet.

No computers are more like cars. The Information Highway is just as
dangerous as regular highways.

I haven't heard about 50,000 people a year getting killed in computer
accidents.

I agree. It should be up to ISPs to help out here. Some already include spam
and virus control. Like the speeding motorist, a fine doesn't stop him doing
it again. Especially if he is rich enouh to afford the fines.

How about the billions of dollars lost by businesses due to a virus, spam,
etc. Total value of losses far exceed the damage caused by auto accidents.

Since when was money worth more than lives?

There are computer stores that rely on 'computer idiocy' to add to company
profits by way of repair charges.. It hurts to think of the effect on
profits that a Computer licensing scheme would have.. addition made to Bill
of Rights, First Amendment, circa 1992.. that all free American computer
technicians will have the right to charge extortionate amounts to remove the
diskette from the floppy drive that stopped the pc from booting to its OS,
while telling the customer of all the errors they had to overcome to return
the pc to the working level when first purchased.. lol

You might feel differently if you lost someone close in an auto accident.

I think you need to direct that thought at the barstards that create the
viruses in the first place. It is these hackers that deliberately go out of
their way to destroy everyone elses pleasure. Some viruses spread like wild
fire and there isn't time to blame someones stupidity.

Prevention is better than a cure.
