Are you having definition update issues?

I was asked to repost to other newsgroups as I did not last week...

I wanted to step back and make sure we have the signature updating mechanism
in place and working for all the beta testers. To make sure we are firing in
all cylinders, I am asking any user to let me know if signatures are not
downloading and installing for them. One caveat is that users behind SUS or
WSUS servers may be running into issues set by their system admins, so I
cannot help there. However, home users and others not behind corporate
update servers please let me know your signature woes (if any). My contact
information is below; just drop the "online" from the email.

Yes it works but it is really slow loading and you think it has timed out and
lost the connection. It would help if Microsoft posted the latest version
number on its website so you knew it was the correct definition version

I have been unable to install the last two definition updates (1.14.1530.8
and 1.14.1525.2) both give the same errors (0x80070643 as shown in Event
Viewer).

If rather than using Windows Update or Microsoft Update I instead ask
Windows Defender itself to get the update then I get a different error as
follows -

"Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80240022: The wrong
diskette is in the drive. Insert %2 (Volume Serial Number: %3) into drive %1.

I have tried uninstalling Windows Defender, redownloading and reinstalling
it (several times now) and this makes no difference. I have also tried
removing all registry entries relating to Defender (before reinstalling it),
and I have also removed the downloaded definition updates so as to force
another download.

I have also tried the steps detailed in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

Note: Each time Microsoft Update does show the file has been downloaded
successfully, it is the installation that fails each time.

When you reinstall Defender you start off back at definition update version
1.00. If I 'hide' the two definition updates (listed above) in Microsoft
Update then it finds the next oldest one which is 1.14.1521.63 and it _DOES_
successfully download and install this version.

Note: my machine had until the two versions listed above, been updating
Defender for several weeks successfully (ever since I first installed it).

Currently my Windows Defender versions are as follows

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1481.0
Definition Version: 1.14.1521.63

My machine is on a home network so it is not behind any SUS or WSUS server.

Puzzled. Windows update, when i ran it, said there was an update for
Defender. I downloaded it. I got an error notice that said it did NOT
install. When I look at the definition version, engine and version, they all
are the most current - i.e. those listed on this site as of 7/18 (def.
1.14.1530.8; version 1.1.1347.0; engine version 1.1.1508.0). So it appears
that despite the error message, it did update.

And..... in spite of having it listed in services, and permitted under the
firewall settings (xp), and trying to turn it off, then on, or change times,
it will STILL still not run automatically.

Peter--I have definitely seen cryptic error messages from the update
function within Windows Defender in a situation when it is attempting an
update, and Windows Update or AutoUpdate is also attempting updates
simultaneously.

In the cases I've seen, WU or AU "win"--and the update is applied, even
though Windows Defender's attempt appears to fail with a cryptic error
message.

I wouldn't be surprised if this clash also happened in reverse--with the
update within Defender in fact succeeding, and Windows Update getting an
error.

So--that's one possible interpretation of what you are seeing. The question
could probably be settled by examining the windowsupdate.log file which can
be found at %windir%\windowsupdate.log and opened with notepad.

However--this can be a large file, and even just the entries needed to be
examined to settle this question would be quite a few lines--so I'm not
proposing doing it myself, but if you are inclined in that direction, you
could look at it yourself and see if you can spot which update succeeded.
Both updates with Defender, and those via Windows Update or AutoUpdate will
all be logged together in that file.

Hi Bill,

In order to add some info with this conflict between Win Update & Win Def,
for my computer, all updates are done by MS update and Win Defender is
unable to do anything (such as verifing that no update is needed). The
message is a mix of english & french (my XP home is a french version).
English part is "Windows Defender was unable to complete the update:
0x8007064c." French part could be roughly translated by " Install source for
this product is'nt available. Verify source is existing and you can access
it".

Hope this can help.

I seem to be having a similar problem to other people and have followed (I
think) all the steps reccomended here. I get the "Windows Defender was
unable to complete the update: 0x8024400a" message. I suspect it must have
to do with some managed update policy on the network so not sure if there is
anything I could do.
One thing occurs to me and that is why cant you make the updates available
to dowload and have W/D able to update from a local file. Not a long term
solution as network users will want to use the product but it would enable a
lot more people to test the other functionality of the beta

Hi gbs;
Take a look at the WD update posts generally by Engel in either the
Announcements, General, or this Signatures newsgroup. The download is
always listed as a very long link like this last one:

As to the other part of your question, where do you get your windows
updates from WSUS or SUS, SUS servers are not supported (and updates are
discontinued as of December 31) without a administrative switch to WSUS
servers which are supported for WD updates, but that still involves some
admin details:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919772

You're right, there are many other solutions *if those servers are not
involved*, but you already know that. Here, your best bet is to do a
search on "0x8024400a" in ALL WD forums (using dropdown box choice "Windows
Defender Beta 2") for multiple suggested solutions across multiple forums.
Sorry, there is no one solution fits all situations.

Hi Steve!
It's fine. Since the last three updates it's been downloaded and installed
without any problem via "Automatic Updates". Not any kind of uninstalling
Signatures trick was needed. It seems to me that this bug has been fixed for
now.
Best regards:
Ivan, from budapest

I receive the error message "Windows Defender was unable to complete the

do?

I noticed an exclamation point on the WD tray icon and when I opened the
application it said that I hadn't updated my definitions since 7/7/2006. I
have WD set to scan daily and to check for updates before each scan.
I used the button to manually check for updates and the popup balloon from
the tray icon said that there were no available updates. Another post gave a
link to a download which I installed after figuring out that I had to exit WD
first and now my definitions are dated 7/19/2006.
I am behind a corporate firewall. Where can I find information on what
should be enabled in the firewall to allow WD updates? Normal automatic
updates from the Microsoft Update site do work.

Have the definitions for MSAS beta1 been stopped again? Last update was
7/14. It's not 7/31 yet...

Thank you,

Windows Defender uses AutoUpdate--so if your automatic updates are, in fact,
coming directly from a Microsoft server, Windows Defender updates should be
as well.

However, in your situation it is quite likely that the server which is being
queried for automatic updates is, in fact, a local corporate server, either
using SUS or WSUS, rather than Microsoft's.

The way to find this out is to look at the windowsupdate.log file:

start, run, notepad %windir%\windowsupdate.log

Search for lines with "SERVER" in them--and look for notations such as SUS
or WSUS on nearby lines.

If your corporate server is SUS, Windows Defender definitions won't be
available from it--it is nearing end of life--December, 2006--so some
replacement technology should be in the works.

If it is a WSUS server, the network administrators are able to make Windows
Defender definitions available if they wish to.

However, if the definitions are not available via the corporate auto-update
source, your options are to go directly to Microsoft's Windows Update
servers (if this is not blocked by the network administartors) or to use the
direct download links posted by Engel regularly as definitions change.
