Are rare/custom fonts embedded in Word's .dot file?

I am using Windows XP SP3, and Word 2007.

I am seeing the following issue: My company has a rare or custom font from
which we generate out corporate logo. The problem is that when we send a
Word document to a client who does not have the logo installed, they see a
character error.

If I remember correctly, Word embedded fonts up to Word 2002, but stopped
doing that in Word 2003. Does anyone know if Word 2007 embeds fonts (so the
document can be read by someone receiving the file who does not have the
font)?

I apologize if someone has already posted this question. I didn't see it.

Special fonts aren't embedded automatically, but you can make it happen --
subject to the licensing information in the font file.

Open the template itself, either through the Open command (not the New
command) or by going to the Templates folder, right-clicking the template,
and choosing Open.

With the template open in Word, go to Office button > Word Options > Save.
Check the box for "Embed fonts in the file". You should check the "only the
characters used" box if the documents based on the file will be for viewing
only; if people who don't have the font on their computer might need to add
text in that font, then leave the box unchecked.

Save and close the template. (You might have to do something, such as insert
and then delete a character, to make Word realize the file needs saving.)

All documents based on the template will automatically inherit these
settings from the template.

If the font you've used doesn't allow embedding, this won't work. Each font
foundry can set this on a font-by-font basis.
