Are microsoft word, excel, power point etc. standard in Windows XP

I had thought that these software packages are standard when you get windows
xp, and I certainly have had them on my computers without asking ofr them
especially, however, i have a friend who recently bought a computer with
windows XP and she doesnt have these packages on her computer! has she been
ripped off, as her supplier now wants to charge her an extra $150 to put them
on her computer???

$150 is cheap. NO, Microsoft Office applications are NOT free. If you
previously purchased a computer with it, believe me, you paid for it one way
or another. Tell your friend to hold out for Office 2003, tho. 2002, by
comparison, sucks.

No Office application is ever included in any version of Windows. Windows
does include Notepad and WordPad. The latter is capable of some functions
similar to Word. Many new computers do come with some office suite installed
(lately it's likely to be Corel Office rather than Microsoft Office) or with
Works Suite, which includes Word 2002. Often an upgrade to Microsoft Office
is offered at low cost. Currently this will be Office 2003. If it is Office
Standard, it will include Work, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. To add
Access and/or Publisher, a different (more expensive) version will be
required.
